Facilitated diffusion
The passive movement of molecules across a cell membrane through a protein channel or carrier protein. It moves substances from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration without the need for energy.
Osmosis
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.
Diffusion
Diffusion is the movement of particles from high concentration to low concentration until evenly spread. It does not require energy. Moves through the phospholipid bilayer
Active Transport
Active transport moves molecules from low to high concentration using energy (ATP) and protein pumps.
Compare diffusion, facilitated diffusion, and osmosis.
Diffusion: small molecules, high → low, no proteins
Facilitated diffusion: large/charged molecules, high → low, uses proteins
Osmosis: water only, high → low, through semi-permeable membrane
