Insurance companies (How can they help)
Insurance companies will use their own internal, or employee investigators to establish the origin and cause of the fire. Speaking with these people may assist the Police investigation.
Contact insurance company promptly and obtain?
- The services of an assessor to value the building and the damage
- Particulars of the insurance on the premises and their contents
- Copies of insurances policy
- Information on prior claims
- Details of any recent increases in cover
- The insurance council of NZ can provide info if you suspect the property is insured with multiple companies.
What constitutes damage by fire?
- Heat damage, melting, oxidation, smoke damage
Area enquiries list
- Conduct area enquiries
- Conduct a preliminary interview of the owner
- When the premise was last secured and by whom
- Whether he or she knows the cause of the fire
- The details of any suspects and any insurance
- Type of business
- Actions leading up to the fire. - Owners demeanour
- Complete the interview and obtain FWS from the informant, witnesses, owner.
- Give your supervisor a sitrep and be prepared to speak to this at the conference.
Part 5 and 6 (Identifying an explosive)
PT5 - Because modern explosive residue are often slight and dissipate rapidly, the OC scene may need to authorise an expert to enter the centre of the scene before it is fully examined. (3 Steps)
- Create a path to the centre by laying clean roll of plastic
- Have ESR swab area immediately
- Vertical sheets of iron adjacent to the blast
- Ensure items used are cleaned before use.
PT6 - May be necessary to remove body parts promptly before they decompose and animal and insects actively contaminate the scene.
