What is a non medical prescriber?

A

-A qualified healthcare professional, like a nurse, pharmacist, physiotherapist, or paramedic, who isn’t a doctor or dentist but has further training to prescribe medicines for patients
-They can be Independent or Supplementary Prescribers

A

-A nurse prescriber may be liable under civil law if clinical negligence occurs
-usually results in compensation not punishment
-e.g prescribing a medication the patient was allergic to
-still liable to the NMC however

A

A

-Medicines Act (1968)= why medicines must be controlled- original law to protect the public
-Human Medicines Regulation (2012)= how medicines are controlled today in practice

A

What are the 5 schedules of controlled drugs?

A
  1. = minimal therapeutic value but high potential for abuse- only prescribed with a Home Office Licence
  2. high potential for abuse with recognised medical value e.g mophine, fentanyl, ketamine
  3. low potential for abuse with medicinal value e.g gabapentin
  4. low potential for abuse and dependence e.g diazepam and steroids
  5. minimal risk of misuse, mostly exempt from CD requirements e.g Codeine
