Language is both Symbolic and Arbitrary
Symbolic- words can stand for or symbolize different things. Words may not be the actual things that they represent (table) and therefore they can have several different meanings
Arbitrary- words don’t have a meaning in and of themselves, they gain meaning by the people that use them
