What type of pain is a red flag
Constant unrelenting
Differentiate peripheral VS central
P= pain travels further from irritation, decreases intensity C= pain travels toward irritation, increase intensity
Differentiate chronic VS joint/soft tissue inflammation
Chronic= morning, improves with activity
Joint/soft tissue= mid day, worse with overwork
Stages:
1) acute/inflammatory
2) subacute/proliferation
3) chronic/remodelling/maturation
Describe acute stage
-4-10d
*clotting (bradykinins, neutrophils, macrophages)
Decrease bleeding= RICE, NSAIDs
Decrease pain= RICE
Decrease inflammation= METH
Promote good scar tissue= gentle ROM/massage, ultrasound
Describe subacute stage
1-15d *granulation, scar tissue formation Collagen formation-weak/vulnerable Fiber orientation= AROM, gentle massage, ultrasound Protection= decrease stress
Describe chronic stage
15d-6 month *scar tissue remodelling Granulation replaced by collagen Apoptosis of cells no longer needed Exercise, friction, regular activity
Types of pain
1) mm
2) vascular
3) visceral
4) constant
5) mechanical
6) episodic
