PAPER 3 Flashcards

(12 cards)

1
Q

Q - Explain why your topic was suitable for a geographical
fieldwork enquiry. 2 marks

A

A - the enquiry investigated whether environmental quality varies in different
locations in Doha(1). As we might expect from out studies of urban issues and
challenges (1)
OR
A2 - We selected 2 sites that allowed us to test the hypothesis in one day (1)
because of the small scale of the data collection (1)

Q

Q - Identify two potential health and safety risks in your
fieldwork and explain how these were reduced. 4 marks

A

A - approaching strangers for interviews (1) - go in pairs rather
than speaking to people alone (1)
Crossing the road (the industrial area is close to a highway and
heavily congested ) (1) . Cross at designated points on the road
and be extra vigilant around traffic (1)

Q

Q - Outline one advantage of the location chosen for your
enquiry. 2 marks

A

A1- One advantage of selecting the Pearl and the Industrial Area is that they
represent two very different types of urban environments in Doha. This made it
easy to compare environmental quality and public perception between a
high-income, planned area (the Pearl) and a lower-income, industrial area.
A2 - These 2 very different areas of the city are close together (1) therefore we
could visit them both and collect enough data in one day we had for fieldwork (1)

Q

Q - Outline the geographical theory or concept that formed
the basis of your fieldwork enquiry. (2marks)

A

A - People living in different areas of a city do not experience equal
environmental quality (1). Doha has lots of low-paid migrant workers
who live in certain areas, so we wanted to see if the environment there is
different from other parts of the city (1)

Q

Q - State one example of secondary data that could be used
in your enquiry and suggest why it would be appropriate.
(2marks)

A

A - We used an academic journal (1) to identify which areas of Doha
are home to low skilled, low paid ‘blue collar workers’ and areas where
higher income ‘white colour workers’ live (1). We could then investigate
environmental quality in these areas

Q

Q - Explain why the data collected was suitable for your
enquiry question . 4 marks

A

A - Environmental quality survey directly measured 15 different
variables of environmental quality (1) same data collected at both sites
so we could compare directly between 2 sites (1) and it produced
quantitative data.
The word clouds showed how people perceived each area, highlighting
differences in cleanliness and attractiveness

Q

Q -Outline one sampling method used to collect
your data. 2marks

A

A - for our data to lack any bias we adopted a random sampling
method (1) we randomly selected some street using a map and
random coordinates before our data collection (1)

Q

Q - Justify 1 method you used to present your data. 4 marks

A

A - I used a radar graph to present the results of the Environmental Quality
Survey at the two sites (1).
Each axis on the radar graph represented a different environmental quality
indicator, such as litter, noise, traffic and green space, with the score plotted
for each site (1).
This method was best as we can plot both sites on to graph to allow for direct
comparison (1).
It is very easy to read (coloured coded) and highlights any anomalies easily (1)

Q

Q - Assess how effective your data presentation techniques were in
representing the data collected 6 marks

A

EnvQS - plotted total for 5 different branches of ENQ on a radar graph
Good - plot both areas on the same graph so easy comparison
Good - coloured coded , visual, easy to read, easy to spot anomalies
Bad - can be messy and difficult to read if we plot more than 2 sites

Q

What conclusions did you reach from the evidence provided by your
data? 6 marks

A
            1. Environmental quality differs significantly between the Pearl and the Industrial Area in Doha. (1)
EQS scores show the Pearl had an average of 69/75, while the Industrial Area scored 37/75. (1)
Word clouds support this: Pearl described as ‘clean’ and ‘attractive’, Industrial Area as ‘ugly’. (1)
The Pearl is home to higher-income, ‘white-collar residents’ and families who expect a well-maintained
              environment. (1)
In contrast, the Industrial Area is mostly low-skilled migrant workers, often single men, whose priorities are
different - less focus on green space and more on being close to work. (1)
Therefore, differences in income, occupation and demographics of people living there help explain why
environmental quality is higher at the Pearl and lower in the Industrial Area. (1)

Q

Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the data collection method(s)
used in your enquiry. 6 marks

A

Strengths -
ENQ survey was collected as a group so we could agree on a score (1) and limit the subjective bias of our group (1)
Weakness -
- Many of those working in Industrial area are low skilled migrant workers leading to
language barrier when interviewing (1) - next time use a translator (1) to increase accuracy
- We only collected data at one time, which might not show changes in traffic, noise, or litter.
(1) - Do surveys at different times or on different days to get more reliable data. (1)
- Use air quality monitor (1) to improve accuracy of air quality in ENQ (1)

Q

Assess the limitations of the data you collected and how it could be
improved. 6 marks

A
          1. The air quality was not measured properly (1) - next time use a air quality monitor to produce
            more accurate results (1)

Some EQS scores and words for the word cloud were based on our opinions, which might be
biased. (1) - Have more than one person score each place and take an average to be fair. (1)
We only looked at a small number of points and people at the Pearl and Industrial Area, so it
might not show the whole area properly (1) - Survey more points and interview more people to
get a better idea of the whole site (1
