- minimal to no change in muscle tone (lip smacking, staring spell, twitching)
- almost always appear in childhood (4 to 12 years)
- sudden onset (20 events or more per day)
- no warning or aura
- often misdiagnosed as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), inattention, or school difficulty
