What is the etiology of pharyngitis?
- viral
- bacterial (strep throat BABHS)
What are the acute infectious pharyngitis clinical manifestations?
- abrupt onset
- sore throat
- fever (lasting 1-4 days)
- painful cervical lymph nodes enlarged
- headache, malaise
- abd pain
- petechial mottling soft palate
Where can a sandpaper like rash form when a pt has strep throat/pharyngitis/GABHS)?
trunk
axillae
elbows
groin
What is the treatment for acute infectious pharyngitis (strep throat)?
- Penicillin (PCN) - take full course, after 24 hours no longer contagious
- replace toothbrush
When does tonsillitis occur?
with pharyngitis
-viral or bacterial
What are the clinical manifestations of tonsillitis?
inflammation
difficulty swallowing and breathing
When might a tonsillectomy be recommended?
-removal of palatine tonsils
- recurrent infections
- sleep disordered breathing
Why would milk products not be given after a tonsillectomy?
-it may coat the throat causing the child to clear the throat which can initiate bleeding
