(21 cards)

1
Q

plantar grasp reflex/babinski

A

purpose is for foundation for standing and walking

what it looks like a baby is when you apply pressure to the base of the toes, toe flexion occurs

when it appears is 28 weeks gestation

Q

traction reflex

A

purpose is to lay a foundation for voluntary control of grasping
what it looks like is if you pull a baby up by the forearms into a sitting position, the head lags; then, you will see flexion of UEs and a reflexive grasp

when it appears is in 28 weeks gestation

and should integrate by 9-15 months

Q

rooting reflex/ searching reflex

A

purpose is that it helps baby find food to stay alive and what it looks like is when you touch a baby on the cheek, the baby turns head to same side with open mouth and when it apperas is 28 weeks gestation and should integrate by 3 months

Q

moro reflex/startle reflex

A

purpose is it acts as a baby’s alarm system or fight or flight repsonse

and what it looks like in a baby is when you drop a baby’s head backwards suddenly and arms abduct with fingers open; then, the hands cross the trunk into abduction. the baby often cries

when it appears 28 weeks gestation and integrates by 2-6 months

positive suport reflex

A

purpose is the foundation for standing
and when weight is placed on the balls of the feet, the legs stiffen and the trunk goes into extension

Q

spinal galant reflex

A

*purpose
- birthing
- helps w/ development of balance +coordination+ vestibular system
- facilitates trunk stabilization+hip movement
- ROM for crawling and walking
- affect abilit to sit still+ short term memory and concentration
- bedwetting

*looks like: touch skin along spine by running finger from shoulder to hip and child laterally flexes trunk toward the side touch

appears gestation: 32 wks
integrates:2-4 mo

(story time:
1. birthing of a baby will have usually the spinal galant reflex with the ATNR and this helps with birthing process as well as the development of sensory info of the auidory and development of balance, coordination, andvestibular system)
2.
2.a kid with a tag on their pants, will cause them to have the spinal galant reflex and wiggle their back , and in class they can become distracted, inattive, uncomfortable, and just the inability to sit still. and you can check for spinal galant reflex by have the kid on and stoking the side of their spine and it looks like ants in their pants)

the purpose is for birthing and helps with development of balance, coordination and vestibular system; and facilitates trunk stabilization, hip movement, ROM for crawling and walking and affect ability to sit still and short term memory, concentration and can lead to bedwetting

what it looks like in a baby is when touching the skin along spine by running finger from shoulder to hip and child laterally flexes trunk toward the side that was touched

when it appears is 32 weeks gestation and should be intergrated by 2-4 months

Q

Asymetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR)

A

left or right reflex impacts eye-hand coordination, handwriting, midline, and laterality, and impacts reading comprehension (poor crossing midline visually)

what is should look like is when turning an infant’s head to one side, arm and leg on that side extend and the opposite side is flexed

when it appears is 37 weeks gestation and integrated in 4-6 months

Q

palmar grasp reflex

A

purpose is foundation for fine motor coordination, grasp, release, and hand manipulation

what it looks like is if you put pressure on the ulnar side of the hand, it causes flexion of the fingers (grasp)

the reflexes appears 37 weeks gestation and should be integrated by 4-6 months

Q

Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR)

A

Purpose is it responsible for changes in muscle tone depending on the position of the head.
Informed by inner ear receptors that sense movement (vestibular system).
It plays a role in the development of body stability. Difficulty holding head up and difficulty sitting up independently when sitting or rolling.

When the child is in supine, the head tilts back and the body is held in EXTENSION.. when the child is in prone, the body limbs are in FLEXION.

appears is 37 weeks gestation and should be integrated by 6 months

Q

Walking (stepping) reflex

A

purpose is foundation for walking
What it should look like when the soles of the feet are firm on a surface and the baby has a recipocal flexion and extension of the legs (looks like walking)

appears by 38 weeks gestation and be integrated by 2-4 months

Q

optical head righting

A

purpose is orients the head in space without visual cues. Labyrinth is in the inner ear and is mediated by vestibular system

what it should look like is when baby is blindfolded, you hold the baby upright and tilt to one side, and the baby’s head rights

appears: birth-2 months

integrates:persists

Q

Landau Reactions

A

purpose is helps develop strength and coordination
in neck, back, and core

what it looks like in baby is when you hold the baby up in the air in prone, baby responds with full extension (superman pose)

appears 3 months

Q

Downward Parachute Protective Response

A

purpose is protection against the impact of a fall. Accurate placement of feet

What it looks like is if you hold the baby upright in front of you and quickly lower baby toward floow. ground and the lower extremities extend

Appears: 4months

Q

Neck Righting Reaction (neck righting acting on body)

A

purpose is it allows baby to roll and transition from supine to side lying

what it looks like is when you place baby in supine and turn the head to one side, the entire body follows and log rolls in the direction that the head was turned

appears: 4-6 months
integrates: 5 years

Q

Body Righting Reaction (body righting acting on body)

A

purpose is it allows baby to roll (requires rotation)

it appears when you place baby in supine and bend one hip and knee toward the chest and you see is segmental roling

apepars is 4-6 motnhs
integrates: 5 years

17
Q

Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (STNR)

A

purpose is it helps the child seperate arm and leg movement independent from each other and commonly called” crawling reflex” because helps child come into crawling position

what it looks like is when the head is flexed, the UE flex and LE extend. When the head is extended the arms extend and the legs flex
gestation:6-9 months
integration:9-12 months

18
Q

Forward Parachute Protective Response

A

Purpose is a proctective response against the impact of a fall

What looks it like is if you hold the baby upright in front of you and lower the baby toward their front then the arms extend and hands open

Appears:6-9 months
Integrates: persists

19
Q

Sideward Parachute Protective Response

A

purpose is it provides protection against the impact of a fall to one side

what it lools like is from sitting, the tip of the baby is off balance and to one side and the arm on that extends and the hand opens

appears: 7 months
integrates: persists

20
Q

Backward Parachute Protective Response

A

purpose is it provides protection against a backward fall

what it looks like if baby is sitting up and you quickly tip the baby backward off balance and see backward arm extension or arm extension to one side

appears: 9-10 months
integrates: persists
