What are the General Instrument Rating Requirements?
- Must Hold a PPL

What Aeronautical Experience is Required for an Instrument Rating?
- 50 hrs of cross-country time of which 10 hrs are in an airplane
- 40 hrs of actual or simulated instrument time of which 15 hrs are dual received
- A cross-country flight of 250 NM with an instructor that is preformed under instrument flight rules and an IFR flight plan has been filed with an ATC facility with an instrument approach at each airport and at least 3 different type of approaches with the use of navigation systems
- 3 hrs of instrument flight training with an instructor within 2 calendar months before the date of the practical exam
What are the privileges of an Instrument Rating?
- Can act as PIC under a flight in IMC
- Can carry passengers for hire on flights of more than 50 NM
- Can carry passengers for hire at night
- Fly in Class A airspace
- Fly special VFR at night
What do you need to act as PIC under IFR?
- 6.H.I.T.S
- Within 6 calendar months preceding the month of the flight
- 6 Instrument approaches
- Holding procedures & tasks
- Intercepting and Tracking courses through the use of navigational electronic Systems
What do you need to carry passengers as PIC?

- 3 takeoffs and landings in category, class, and type if required in the last 90 days
- For night it is 3 takeoffs and landings to a full stop during periods between 1 hr after sunset and 1 hr before sunrise
What do you need if you have not done anything instrument related over the past 12 months?
An Instrument Proficiency Check is done to be current in Instrument. It can be done with a CFII, DPE, Military check pilot, or a company check pilot. It must be done in the appropriate aircraft category and you will be tested on;
- ATC clearances & procedures
- Flight by reference to instruments
- Navigation systems
- Instrument approach procedures
- Emergency operations
- Post-flight procedures
When can you log instrument time?
A person may log instrument time only for that flight time when the person operates the aircraft solely by reference to instruments under actual or simulated instrument flight conditions.

What are the limitations of BasicMed?
- Carrying more than 5 passengers
- Flying at or above 18,000 ft MSL
- Exceeding 250 kts
- Flying for hire
- Flying an aircraft certified to carry more than 6 occupants
- Flying an aircraft with a maximum certified takeoff weight of more than 6,000 lbs
What is the difference between being “current” and being “proficient”
Being “current” means that a pilot has accomplished the requirements and is “legal” to fly.
A “proficient” pilot can conduct a flight that is more smart and safe
