Ocean trench
-oceanic lithosphere is now cooler and more dense.
-When it meets less dense continental plate, the oceanic crust subducts down into the asthenosphere aided by slab pull (45º)
-Due to downward movement a subduction zone is created with a deep sea trench being formed in a linear pattern. Long, narrow and deep (5-10km) form on deepest parts of the ocean floor
Example: The Atacama Trench- The Nazca oceanic crust is subducted into the asthenosphere as it is pushed towards the South American plate
