What are the three plate margins
Constructive, destructive, conservative
Constructive plate margins
Plates move apart at 2cm a year and magma rises to form new crust and volcanoes
Destructive plate margins with two continental plates
They crumple upwards to create fold mountains which have no magma, so no volcanoes
Destructive plate margins with an oceanic and continental plate
The oceanic plate is pushed under the continental plate because it is more dense (subduction)
The oceanic plate melts due to heat and friction which creates magma
Destructive plate margins with two oceanic plates
The oldest plate is forced downwards because it is denser (subduction)
Molten rock cools rapidly
Conservative plate margins
Plates move side by side either in opposite directions or in the same direction at different speeds. They get stuck as they slide past each other which releases pressure and creates friction
