Q

How would you approach situations where your personal beliefs might conflict with medical ethics or patient wishes?

A
  • firstly have i establiahed competence- regardless of if i agree or disagree with

-I would act on GMC guidlelines, by not sharing my personal beliefs, not denying patients of their autonomy over treatment, must not share my beliefs to patients in ways that exploit their vulnerability. Ulitmatley, if i foumd myu perosnal beleifs had any potetial to affect my judgement i would ask another doctor who can provde the care the patiuents ask them to treat the patient.

Fully inform patients and make sure their wishes are not influenced by anything else other than own wishes

Q

How do you handle stress and pressure, especially in critical decision-making scenarios?

A

Make sure to breathe and keep a calm head as i often find the frst thought that comes to mind under stress/when your thoughts are rushing in your k=mind is often not the best , most effecnt or – in case of medicine id assume- not the safest. So i like to make sure my decison isnt rushed but act quckly and calml at the same time. An examle- at work eith GF FREE!!!

Who has had a major influence on you as a person
My older sister Amelia has had a huge influence on me as a person. I truly believe she has shaped me a lot as a person and in positive ways. 1.) I am inspired by her kindness and support. Growing up i viewed my sister as my best friend, and she remains someone i can always talk to. She has always pushed me to succeed and try anything and everything i wanted to do. My sister has consistently taken time out of her day to help me and support me to achieve my goals. Upon hearing i wanted to study medicine she was proud and supportive, offering to take me to open days and research universities with me. I believe i am a confident person, and i wouldn't be that person today without her telling me I was capable of anything i set my mind to. My sister is a very understanding and approachable person, i always feel i can turn to her when I'm upset and worried. So, I grew up learning to how to act with kindness and understand how to communicate with empathy and respect. I believe I owe a lot of my successes to my sister, and she continues to inspire me now as i approach becoming an adult.

How important is IT in medicine
I would say very important. Used in many aspects DAY TO DAY DR LIFE... -emailing colleagues, organising meetings, word processing to send referral latters, spreadsheets to anayse data from research or to make plans, powerpoint in presntations to colegaues - very important for deliverig leessons to medical students virtually and setting work to be learn. “Information technology is extremely important in medicine because it improves patient safety, efficiency, and access to care. One key example is electronic patient records, which allow healthcare professionals to quickly access accurate information such as medications, allergies, and test results. This reduces errors and improves continuity of care, especially when patients move between different services. IT is also essential in diagnosis and treatment, for example t AI tools that help identify patterns in scans or test results. In addition, telemedicine has become increasingly important, allowing patients to access care remotely, which is particularly beneficial for those in rural areas or with mobility issues. From a public health perspective, IT supports research and data analysis, helping track disease trends, evaluate treatments, and respond to outbreaks more effectively. However, IT also brings challenges, such as data security, patient confidentiality, and the risk of over-reliance on technology. Doctors must therefore use IT as a tool to support, not replace, clinical judgement and human interaction. FUTURE: AI.. Diagnosis, treatment plans for patients , surgery – better precision, less human error, admin so docs can have more time for patients- reduce workload amnd stress for docs, ALREADY AI IS BEING USED- AI has shown accuracy rates up to 90% in detecting breast cancer scans often higher than human radiologists. SUMMARISE AND CONCLUDE

crucial for holistic, continuous patient care, focusing on administering meds safely, monitoring vitals, patient advocacy, emotional support (using empathy, patient education, and acting as a key link in the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to ensure safe discharge, differing from doctors by emphasizing hands-on, long-term patient interaction and often specialized roles like Nurse Practitioners who can prescribe
47

Start by aknowlegng how vital nurses are to HC system.. the constant close proximity they have with patients means that they are able to notice slight changes in behaviour and appearance which often results them being the first one to notice red flags. HOWEVER... docs play bigger role in diagnosis- critical thinking skills – make sure to be aware that some nurses can prescribe and diagnose- Abiloty to perfirm surgical proceedures, hile nurses can doctors have ailoty to do more Rigourous and in depth learning in med schoolm COMPARE W EXAMPLES Wider range of specialties – be aware that nures can specailse ut docs have more options parctuary intrested in OBS and gynae and surgery which is unique to medicine- tf aligns with long term career goals

Can you share a memorable interaction with a healthcare professional that solidified your decision to become a doctor?
Patient needed biopsy, seemed distressed and upset, revealed also battling liver cancer, dr communicated with empathy, explaining procedure and what would happen after the proceedure. Patient left much calmer and seemed less anxious- ramazing impact to patientsv lives – inspiring career USE STARR MADE ME REALISE BEING A DOCTOR IN THAT ROLE IS NOT JUST TREATING APATIENT UT VIEWING THEM AS A WHOLE- TREATING MANY ASPECTS OF THEIR WELLBEING REFLECTION—how great of an impact docscan have on patients through just communication and the importance of comm treatment. Rlly know i will enjoy as I ref;ected that its not just treatmet f patients o rlly enjoy that its also the menta; and pysocal aspects. Support patient and here to talk. Describe a moment when you realize the profound impact a doctor can have on a patient's life. Same as before
51
How would you approach situations where your personal beliefs might conflict with medical ethics or patient wishes?
I recognise that as a doctor, my primary responsibility is to act in the patient’s best interests and respect their autonomy, regardless of my personal beliefs. If a situation arose where my personal values conflicted with a patient’s wishes, I would first ensure that my beliefs never influence the quality or neutrality of the information I provide. - firstly have i establiahed competence- regardless of if i agree or disagree with -I would act on GMC guidlelines, by not sharing my personal beliefs, not denying patients of their autonomy over treatment, must not share my beliefs to patients in ways that exploit their vulnerability. Ulitmatley, if i foumd myu perosnal beleifs had any potetial to affect my judgement i would ask another doctor who can provde the care the patiuents ask them to treat the patient. Fully inform patients and make sure their wishes are not influenced by anything else other than own wishes
52
Share an experience where you showcase empathy and compassion.
MUST SAYYY I THIGHT ABOYT HOW HE WOULD BE FEELING- PERHAPS ANXIOUS ABOUT HOW IT WOULD LOOK OR FEEL TO BE FITTED SO I RIED TO TAKE HIS MAIND AWAY FROM IYT FOR A BT BY INITIATING A IHT CONVO ABOUT HIS COMMUTEE, AND HOW HIS DAY HAS BEEN. -work experince.. Protheti eye man USE STARR SAY WHAT YOU LEARNT FROM IT
53
How do you deal with critism?
Introduction: Different forms Method: constructive I reflect on the criticism given and act upon it to improve (learning opportunity , follow up and ask questions Example: Secondary school, handwriting critsm- took on board for examiners to read and get marks i deserved I decided to think of a project together, and allocate tasks able to produce something that we all liked and the school appreciated it Method: poor can be derogatory, offensive and making a mockery understand that this may be a result of emotions which run high especially in medicine don't take it personally continue to act in a professional manner, don't let it get in the way of your work Can understand how this feels from working in a restaurant haha – point of humour Conclusion: criticism can be very insightful to see where you can improve, important with advancing in clinical skills = patient benefits
54
What steps have you taken to find out whether Medicine is the right career for you?
First work experience , communication direct improvement to patient lives through med this is for me and sometubg I’m good at- coached gym and also work at restaurant . So I can be a good doc that… Secondly - live long learning intense about of knowledge seen at med school lecture, asking Ned students and wider reading (Macleod) , - recognise it requires a lot of I tested knowledge but for me this is actually something that excites me as I understand sacrifice for work plus genuine interest avd passion. How I can improve patients lives through this knowledge that fascinates me. Finally - recognise challenges, need with striking , Adam Jay . But I’m motivated and have incredible respect for docs, I will prioritise mental health and coping mechanisms for myself and so my patients are safe and functioning best for them .

What does a doctor for apart from treating patients?
First outline that docs have a lot of roles They have perosnal lives, may be parents, sister, brother, tutor, ect - listeners... so a pateint may need or want to talk to doc about an unrelated issue to the med their treating the,m for.. listen and provide support and trust for HOLISTIC CARE - PIES - Some go into the resarch side of medicine Refer to work exp using STARR of the teavher bit where they sow many skills- for ecample when i was on wrk exp i watch minor dental surgeries and biposies, i would ask what they were doing/ wy doing something a certain way isimportant- they explained to me teaching me. Also have to do a lot od paper work Training and expertise... doctors are alwasy learning, new spevialitues, learning everyday on a job. FY1/2- taught. A doctor does far more than just treat patients. They play a vital role in prevention and health promotion, helping patients manage long-term conditions and make informed lifestyle choices. Doctors also act as advocates for patients, coordinating care within multidisciplinary teams and making complex decisions in the best interests of those they treat. Leadership and planning are key aspects of the role, from organising care for individual patients to managing resources and supporting teams in clinical settings. Doctors are also teachers, passing on knowledge to medical students, junior doctors, and patients to ensure safe and effective care. NOT ROBOTS- acknwldge they also have peroal lives Provide examples of what you have seen/ done of thes skills usuing STARR Finally, medicine requires lifelong learning — keeping up to date with research and evidence-based practice to continually improve patient outcomes. In short, being a doctor combines clinical expertise with communication, leadership, teaching, ethical judgement, and a commitment to learning, all aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities.” CONCLUDE- SUMMARISE ALL POINTS AND SAY WHY THIS APPEALS AND EXCITES YOU

Can understand and connect w pateints on a ddeeper level for best care and respect. -begin by acknowledging the hardships in medicine- long, unsociable hours, staffing crisis, long waiting list putting pressure on nhs- DESCRIBE WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!! This could be bed shortages, waiting listrs, Bame ataff ` - describe hw long it takes for med school 5 years plus and state that its req loaads of knowledge and takes nup a lot of [ersnal time than other courses, stress - GIVE STATS - -empathy for docs who left - Aware of this, I strongly believe that the advangatfes of med outweigh the stresses and that i align with the many skills req of a doctir.- Apprechiate te communication, analytucal thinking, life long learning. USE EXAMPLES FROM WORK EXP WITH STARR - I also have developed tecniues that will help me relieve stress such as, speniding ten mins before bed to relax and breathe deeply, stress, gym., balancing time with family is important. USE EXAMPLES, E.G MOCK EXAM STRESS BALANCED WTH FAMILY STRYGGLES SISTER MENTAL HEALTH AND UCAT REVISION. SAY VERY DETREMINED link that to mock exam above saying i kknew how hard i needed to work for myself and to get into med schl. Wanted predivtion of all a*s.
57
What do you think will be the most difficult things you might encounter during your training? How will you deal with them?
include stats!!! - WORK- LIFE BALANCE IS DIFFICULT. Lomg unsocialble hours. I can nderstand this to some extent, balancing work, family issues, a job, personal life. DEV TECHNQUIES - UNDERSTAFFED- current issue... give stats. Leads to increased pressure, burnouts, this can impact my mental health and my abilty to practie to best ability to provide best patient care, so develop mindfullness texchniuqes. -EXAM PRESSURE AND KNOWLEDGE. VITALLY IMPORTANT FOR DOCS FOR BEST POSS PATIENT CARE- CANNOT AFFROD KARGE GAPS OF KNOWLEDGE. Esure im kept up to date, seek help when needed -upsetting sit with patiens - failiure - conclude that while med will lead to facig hardships, youre determined, and excired prepared indset into going i nto it.

Discuss your involvement in extracurricular activities that demonstrate your interest in medicine
GIVE 2-3 EXAMPLES Example 1: love for patient contact. VOLUNTEERING AT CARE HOME. Describe a moment- perhaps bingo, say about how you brightened day by jusr chatting.. Ones family all lived in Ireland s quite isolated. USE STARR. Realised that simply being present and speaking can have a profound impact on a person- excites me for medicine where i will be able to support nd care or patients everyday. Volunteering helped dev empathy and communication skulls, and LISTENING skills which is vital in med- must listen very well to recognise possible diagnosis and enquire further for patient carer. Example 2 – able to attend a lecture with med student at UOB- learnt about how they're examined on anatomy of pelvis, abdomen. Extremley interesting insi9ght, complex knowledge required- hard but exciting. Shows and highlighted y ove fr science, particularly anatomy . Maacleons clinical skills LOVE FOR SCIENCE WILL SERVE ME VERY WELL IN LIFE LOMNG LEARNING JOB OF MED.Aside from skills that will aid me a a doc and med student, i have a genuine passion for medicine that cannot be learnt or taught, but comes from within. Speak abt commitment to science, and patient cae. Growing up with isisters w mh issues ive learnt an understanding.. Can understand and connect w pateints on a ddeeper level for best care and respect.

Which area of medicine are you most interested in and why?
Demonstrate knowledge of field: surgery Where did i first get interest- heart dissection a level biology! I love the complexoty of the heart and intracate stfructure, facinated learning about a component of the body and bein able to visualse the structure in real life. DEXTERITY an precision inspires me and directly vsualising how youre improing a patients life is truly incredible. List pros: Although i am of course not set in my ways, and must experince for myself during med school foudatin years, lots of time to decide. EG im intrested in GP- holisti care, broad range of patients and conditins. De a close dpc-oat elatinship and able to see some patients grow up eg baby- adult.

Why are doctors leaving the NHS?
State a stat showing how many are leaving.. State reasons why and explain GIVE STATS IN MOST POINTS 1: Understaffing as it is places pressucre on the current ones woeking. For example, Gps understaffing leads to lack of appointments so patients ae going to a&e which puts pressure on stff, nc waiting times when patients woth acute conditions oculd be treated by gp. Leads to bunput idf atff, and decreased patient care. So lweaving due to syress and burnout. 2: Also leaving due to lack of training posts 30,000 to 10,000. This leds to a lack of progression so docs going abroad or other fields. Say ehy this is an issue- detrimental mpact on patient care, inc waitimg times- stresss delaed doagnosis, [ubiv opionoi of nhs decreases, possibly deters ppl aapiring to be doctors to apply. Provide solutions- inc pay to allow more docs to stay and join inc training, inc funding for more staff, make it easoer to international ppl tp get jobs as doctors t inc staff, better mental health support for all nhs staff.
61
Which aspect of medicine do you not like?
Acknowlfge while there are many aspects to med i do like, as woth all jobs there are some aspects i dont like An aspect would be the stressful lon unsociablehours. This can deffo be tiring and perhaps upsetting to have less free time to spend with friends and family. A way i would cope is to just spend as much time i cn in comm with friends and fam, while still maintaining my resposibility to learn as a dpc and responsibilty to patients. I know ill be able to do this as, while its on a smaller scale i currently am committed to studies to experience having to decline certain meetups to focus on my worl.but still am ablw to balance time effectively with fam and freinds but i do undertans the element of sacrifice. -Workload is stressful. PROVIDE STAT. Wr exp... understaffed which did cause some stresss. then provide coping mecg - condlude and state teardles youre very determined t study med, understand the stresses and downsides but verall excited and prepared
62
What is the importance of lifelong commitment and how does lifelong learning relate to medicine
Particularly important for med as need yo be usre and commited when applying as its a long stressful process- desrie briefly how long it takes , 5 years med school, two years foundation year, can tak over a decade to e fully specilaised. - cmmitment to collegaes and pateints – swoing up with a smile and proc=vifing best care everuyday -lifelong lrning is important in med as youre forever learning at every point of your job, even consultant. E.g advaces in AI, new treatments, new methods of surgery, as communication methods change with generations we must learn to provide most respect to patients nhs core value. Important were up to date for best patient care. Important to understand you DONT know everything, in order to improve- YOU CAN ALWAYS BE BETTER AND DO BETTR FOR YOUR PATIENTS, so keep striving to impove. Personally i thin this aspect of med s tryuly inspirg and appeals to me as a keen learner- povide examples from clinicl diganosis book reading ectrcurriculr. Im alwasy intruiged to learn more. -balance, summarise and conclude
63
if you couldnt do medicine, what job would you do/
If I couldn’t study medicine, I would consider becoming a physiotherapist. I’m particularly interested in anatomy and how structure relates to movement and recovery. Physiotherapy appeals to me because it involves applying detailed anatomical knowledge to help patients regain function and independence. It also requires strong communication and patient-centred care, as progress depends on motivating and supporting patients over time. These skills closely align with medicine. However, medicine remains my first choice because it allows me to combine a deeper understanding of anatomy and physiology with diagnosis, anf prblem solving crirtcal hinking leadership, and managing patients’ overall care. It also includes the unique specialities im intested in such as surgery, obs and gynae.
