Required Practical 8 Measuring the EMF of a Cell
Clean the metal strips with sandpaper. Why?
This removes any oxide layers.
Use 1 mol dm⁻³ solutions. Why?
The solutions need not be 1 mol dm⁻³, i.e., standard conditions.
Set up the U-tube with NaCl solution. Why?
This is the salt bridge.
Allows the continuous flow of ions
completes the circuit
Solution needs to have ions not present in cell at all.
Connect a voltmeter. Why?
The voltmeter sits in parallel and has a high resistance. It measures potential difference (i.e., voltage).
