Specific heat capacity practical
Set up equipment then wrap sides and base of block with insulator heater should fit snugly into one hole in the block
If there is space between the thermometer and second hole drop water into hole using a pipette to increase thermal contact
If power of heater is unknown turn on power source and measure current and potential calculate power using P=IV
Keep power source on measure temperature every 10 minutes
Draw a graph of temperature against work done find the gradient of the line
Find specific heat capacity by gradient divided by mass of block
Thermal insulation practical testing different types of materials
Set up equipment wrap 4 out of 5 beakers with insulating material
The beaker that is not wrapped is used as a control
Cut out circles of cardboard to use as lids for the beakers
Pour warm water from the kettle in all the beakers and measure initial temperature of each beaker
Start stop watch measure temperature every 3 minutes
Calculate change in temperature
Resistance practical resistance of a wire
Set up a single circuit. Attach length of the wire to a meter ruler using pieces of tape attach crocodile clip to one end
Attach second crocodile clip 10cm across the ruler measure current and voltage through the wire
Repeat by moving crocodile clip along wire by 10cm and measure current and voltage
Calculate resistance of wire at each point using the equation V=IR
Plot a graph using length of the wire against resistance of wire at that point
Resistance practical resistance within a circuit
Construct a circuit
Switch on power supply and close switch record voltage and current
Construct circuit rearranging resistors from series to parallel
Switch on power supply close switch and measure voltage and ammeter for this circuit arrangement
Calculate total resistance for each circuit using V=IR
