Can never be used when?
When it’s being used to talk about someone. Ex.: “Je suis mangeant.” Doesn’t exist but “Je mange.” does. (Both say, “I am eating.”)
It can’t be used after what?
A verb.

It is unchanging except in the case of pronominal verbs. So that the reflexive pronoun is in front of the participle.
When used as a verb what does it do?
Expresses an action that is simultaneous with, but possibly not related to, the action of the main verb.
What can the participle also be besides a verb?
A gerund.
