They believe that the church will pass through the first half of the period and that the rapture will take place in the middle of it.

considered spiritually dead before he comes alive in Christ at salvation.

Eternal death- the eternal judgment which comes alive in death upon those who have never been made
spiritually alive. It is the eternal judgment of God which comes upon those who have never, in their lifetime, “passed out of death into life” (John 5:24). This also called the second death, the lake of fire (Rev 20:14).

1. Purgatory- soul which are completely pure at death are allowed to enter heaven, to enter into the presence of God. The souls which are not perfectly pure and are in need of cleansing go to a place of purging called purgatory to “purge” the guilt of venial sins. Primarily supported by non-canonical book Maccabees.

WHY WE DO NOT BELIEVE:
i. No solid scriptural support
ii. Violates the teaching of the scriptures in the sufficiency of the blood of Christ to cleanse sin and of salvation by grace through faith.

2. Soul-sleeping- after death, the soul lapses into a state of sleep or unconscious repose.

WHY WE DO NOT BELIEVE:
i. Sleep is used as a metaphor taken from the similarity in appearance between a dead body and a sleeping person.
ii. Believers who die enjoy a conscious communication with Jesus

3. Spiritism -
   * Spiritism teaches that the living may communicate with the dead and the dead with the living, usually through the agency of a “medium.”
   * They are produced by deceptive manipulations, as has often been proved.

WHY WE DO NOT BELIEVE:
* They are produced by “lying spirits”: 1 Kings 22:22-23 1 Tim. 4:1

4. Annihilationism- relates primarily to the unsaved. According to this, there is no conscious existence at all for the wicked after death or simple the unsaved ceases to exist at his time of death.

WHY WE DO NOT BELIEVE
i. We are immortal beings
ii. Death and destruction is punishment and the scriptures are clear that the unsaved will continue to exist forever (Ecc 12:7)

5. Conditional immortality- the soul is not created or born with immortality, but receives it upon confession of faith in Jesus. The one who dies without Christ simply ceases to exist because he has not received the gift of immortality.

WHY WE DO NOT BELIEVE:
They confuse immortality with eternal life. Eternal life received at salvation is more than eternal existence, it is rather a quality of life in the presence of Christ. God is eternal but man also received derived immortality at creation.
