Straight Needle Blood Draw

Answer 1

1. Set up all equipment
2. TQ proximal to site
3. Clean site
4. Preload Red Tube into vaccutainer being careful not to puncture the tube yet
5. Insert needle bevel up until the needle tip is in the “meat” of the vein
6. Puncture tube in vacutainer checking for consistant blood flow
7. Once blood flow stops and tube is full, repeat this process for next 3 tubes
8. Collect blood samples in Red Blue Green Lavender order (Red Blood Gives Life)
9. Once all samples taken grab gauze pad and drape it over the site
10. remove needle and cap the sharp
11. Put pressure on Site for 30 seconds

1. Set up all equipment
2. TQ proximal to site
3. Clean site
4. Insert needle bevel up into vein until flash
5. Advance angiocath 1 mm
6. Advance catheter while extracting needle
7. Hold tamponade of vein
8. Make needle safe
9. Release TQ
10. Attach extension to catheter
11. Clean any blood at site
12. Place Tegaderm with the site in the clear frame
13. Secure IV hub with tape
14. Secure IV extension to hub
15. Set flow rate
