What is the Gallery?

A

The Gallery is the Procreate home screen. You are automatically in the Gallery when you open Procreate. From the Gallery, you can see your canvasses and Stacks. The word “Procreate” appears at the top left-hand corner of the screen.

What is a Stack?

A

A Stack is a group of canvasses within the Gallery. In the Gallery, a Stack looks like an untidy stack of papers. When you open a Stack, the Stack’s name, or the word ‘Stack” if not renamed, appears at the top left-hand corner of the screen.

  1. From the Gallery, tap and hold a canvas, then drag it into a Stack. Keep holding until the Stack flashes blue and opens, then release. You can also do this with two Stacks.
  2. Use the Select button at the top of the screen. A blue bar will appear at the top of the screen. Tap on the canvas and the Stack you want. A blue check mark will appear. Tap “Stack” in the menu at the top of the screen.

A

From inside a Stack, tap and hold a canvas, then drag a canvas to the Stack name in the top left-hand corner of the screen – wait until the black Stack name changes to blue and the word Procreate appears. Keep holding the canvas until you drag it where you want it to be.

What do the Paint brushes do?
The Paint brushes add pigment (pixels) to your canvas. The nature of the pigment added depends on the brush you select.

The Smudge brushes smooth, blend and mix the colours (pixels) on your canvas.

This slider adjusts the size of your brush – Paint, Smudge and Erase. Increase the size by dragging up and decrease the size by dragging down.

What can you do to make more minor adjustments to your brush size or brush opacity?
After tapping a slider on the Side Bar, while keeping your finger or pencil on the screen, drag it away from the slider, then move it up and down. This allows you to make finer adjustments to the size or opacity of the Paint tool. The further away you go, the smaller the increments become.

Open up the Brush Library. Select one brush. Swipe right to left on the brush.

How do you duplicate a brush? How is the duplicate brush different from the source brush?
To duplicate a brush, swipe from right to left on a brush, and tap duplicate. This copies the brush, and gives it the same name but adds a number at the end (to match the number of times it was duplicated).

How can you rearrange the order of the brushes in a Brush Library?
Open the Brush Library. Tap on the name of a brush and hold, then move slightly. This will cause the brush to pop up and a green plus sign to appear. The brush can then be moved to another location in the brush set or to another brush set.

How many brushes can be saved in the "Recent" brush set at the top of the Brush Library?

How do you find where a brush in the "Recent" brush set came from?
Swipe right to left on the recent brush you want to find. This opens the Find-Pin-Clear Menu. Tap on "Find". Then scroll through the brush sets until you find the set with the blue icon. That is where that brush came from.

Tap the Plus + Sign that appears when your move the Brush size or Opacity slider.

After dragging a colour to a spot on the canvas, hold the pencil on the canvas and drag the pencil to the far right of the screen and back to the left. The threshold (blue line at the top of the screen will increase (right) or decrease (left).

What is the purpose of the "Continue Filling" colour drop option?
After you drag and drop colour on your canvas, select the "Continue Filling" option located in the centre top of the screen. This option allows you to fill multiple areas with the same colour or change colours and continue filling without dragging and dropping the colour each time.

The Colour Companion is a floating colour wheel. How do you activate the Colour Companion?
Tap and hold on to the small bar at the top of the Color Panel and pull down and away. This changes the Color Panel to the Color Companion, a smaller, simplified version. It can be repositioned anywhere on the canvas.

How do you return the Colour Companion to its original docked position?
Tap on the black circle with the X on the Color Companion.

What are these two coloured rectangles at the top right-hand corner of the Colours Panel?
The left rectangle is your primary colour, and the right is your secondary colour. By pressing and holding the Colour Circle you can switch between these two colours. The secondary colour works with Color Dynamics in Brush Settings.

Draw a line and pause before lifting your pencil. This draws a perfectly straight line. Note: The Gesture for Quickshape must be set to "Draw and Hold".

QuickShape allows you to automatically snap hand-drawn lines and shapes into perfect geometric forms like circles, squares, triangles, and lines.

How do you combine multiple separate layers into one layer?
1. Finger-pinch the layers together. 2. Make the top layer the active layer of the two layers you want to merge. Tap on the active layer to open the layer menu. Select "Merge Down". The two layers will be merged together.

This makes the layer the Primary Layer. The layer will change to blue.

How do you create a "Secondary layer"?
Swiping left to right on a layer, other than the Primary layer, will make that layer a Secondary layer. You can have multiple Secondary layers. The Secondary layers are light blue. Another left-to-right swipe will clear the selection of the Secondary layer.

What is the purpose of a Secondary layer?
It is a way of temporarily associating a layer, or layers, with your Primary layer so that you can move them together to another location in the layer stack, put them into a layer group or delete them, or perform specific actions that can affect all of them at once (Selection, Transform/Distort/Warp and Liquify).

What are the two ways to remove a Secondary layer?
1. Swipe left to right on that Secondary layer. 2. Tap on another layer to make it the Primary layer.

What are the two ways to Alpha Lock a layer?
You can Alpha Lock a layer by: - a two-finger left to right-swipe on the layer; or - tapping on the layer to activate the layer menu, then select Alpha Lock. A checkered background will appear on the layer to show that it is alpha locked.

What are the two ways to remove Alpha Lock from a layer?
You can remove Alpha Lock by: - a two-finger left to right swipe on the layer; or - a tap on the layer to activate the layer menu, then de-select Alpha Lock. A checkered background will disappear

What options menu is activated when you swipe right to left on a layer?
Lock, Duplicate and Delete Menu for any layer except the last remaining layer. If there is only one layer, the Delete option is Clear since there has to be one layer.

What is the difference between "clearing" and "deleting" a layer?
When you "clear" a layer, the contents of the layer are removed, but the layer remains. When you "delete" a layer, you remove the layer and the contents of the layer.

Why would you "lock" a layer?
To prevent you from accidentally writing on or deleting the layer.

What is the difference between turning on "Alpha Lock" on a layer and "Locking" a layer?
"Alpha Lock" only allows you to paint in the area on the layer containing pixels. The thumbnail of an alpha-locked layer has a checkered background. "Lock" makes it so you cannot do anything with the layer. The thumbnail of a locked layer has a "lock" icon beside the name.

What happens when you two-finger tap on a layer?
A two-finger tap on an active layer opens the Opacity slider for that layer

What are the two ways to change the opacity of a layer?
1. Two-finger tap on the layer and then change the opacity using the Opacity Slider at the top of the screen. 2. Tap on the "N" on the layer and change the opacity using that slider.

What is the suggested gesture to select a layer on a canvas?
One finger "touch and hold" on a place on the canvas with pixels. This invokes layer select and identifies the layer where the pixels are located and makes that layer the primary layer in the Layer panel.

How do you change the gesture for "Layer Select"?
Actions (Wrench), Prefs, Gesture Controls, Layer select. There are six gestures to choose from.

How do you reorganize the layers in the Layer Panel?
Tap and hold a layer. Once it pops out, you can drag it up and down, then release it.

Under the Wrench Icon (Actions), Preferences (Prefs) and then "Gesture Control".

You have swiped left and selected "Find" on one of the brushes in the "Recent" section of the Brush Library. How do you locate the brushset for that brush within your brush library?
Procreate will show the found brush as blue in the parent brushset. Scroll through the brushsets until you find a blue brush icon. That will be where the found brush is located.

What does tapping on the "N" on the right side of a layer do?
Open a dropdown showing the opacity slider and the blend modes. "N" refers to the Normal Blend mode.
