• have an oscillator inside a plastic case
• when current flows through they produce a buzzing sound often 400 Hz in frequency
• examples include doorbells and alarms

• usually require a driver circuit to provide an electrical signal
• the correct speaker resistance value must always be used to prevent circuit damage
