Q

Can you give me a quick project overview?

A
  • My project involved rolling out Windows 11 to the 80+ devices at BPX that were still running Windows 10.
  • Manager was concerned that Microsoft had announced support for Windows 10 would be ending in October 2025 and thus these machines would stop receiving security updates, which could open our estate up to vulnerabilities.
  • I used ManageEngine Endpoint Central, our unified endpoint management system to generate a report of Windows 10 devices and sort them into three groups based on upgrade elegibility, using Microsoft’s minimum system requirements.
  • Did test upgrade by uploading Win 11 iso file to EC patch repository and deploying it to a test machine.
  • Did benchmark testing using PassMark score and resource monitor to measure CPU and memory usage before and after upgrade.
  • Actual rollout was done in phases, starting with small subset of local machines for pilot upgrades.
  • Upgrades done out of hours to avoid disruption in small batches scaling up to a max of 10 a night once I was satisfied with process.
  • I would observe upgrade status following morning and then apply missing patches to devices to improve system maintenance and security.
  • Daytime was used to provision replacement devices for those incompatible with Windows 11 and those with insufficient disk space.

A
  • 8th Gen or newer Intel Processor
  • 4GB RAM
  • 64GB storage
  • UEFI with Secure Boot which is a replacement for older BIOS firmware which loads before OS and only allows the computer to start with software that is signed by trusted authorities to prevent malicious code from loading before OS
  • TPM (trusted platform module) 2.0 is a dedicated security chip on motherboard that stores security keys - used by BitLocker, Windows Hello

Q

What additional functionality did Windows 11 bring?

A
  • Snap layouts and virtual desktops ensure laptop users with limited screen space had better options for multitasking
  • Better Teams intergration supported BPX’s recent move away from Avaya Spaces
  • Copilot AI great for summarising meeting notes and other productivity tasks, big potential for future
  • Continued updates and claims of performance improvements which were verified with benchmarks
