2. cause precedes effect (cause comes before outcome)(we don’t want the cause being occurring from anything)
3. relationship not explained by another variable

Used in situations where full experimental design is not possible

1. Will have a control group with treatment,
2. Involves manipulation of IV
3. Lacks randomization and/or control,
4. May use a non-equivalent comparison group (not randomly selected)
5. As a result one cannot make causal inferences.
