left heart border obscured= lingual pneumonia

• obstruction of a lobar bronchus e.g. tumour, aspirated food etc.
• Lobe is no longer ventilated so air is reabsorbed - lobe loses volume and collapses

can see shape of lobe in CXR, in black, and rest is white

Pleural effusion

Pleural fluid tends to collect at lung bases – forms the curved appearance of a ‘meniscus’ at the lung edges

so at base of lung, can’t see diaphragm, just white at bottom

Pneumothorax

Answer 4

Small pneumothorax is subtle – dark crescent without lung markings bounded medially by the lung edge, often at the lung apex

no lung markings= so like clearer on one side
