What is nucleus pulposus?
A three-dimensional lattice of collagen fibres within a hydrophilic proteoglycan gel.
Changes in the gel with increasing age lead to dehydration and changes in mechanical behaviour of the disc.
What is annulus fibrosis?
Approx. 20 annular bands surrounding the nucleus, with fibres in each band, arranged in alternate directions.
This gives great strength and provides restraint to movement.
What is the cartilage end plate?
The anatomical limit of the disc to which the annulus attaches.
It allows the diffusion of fluid into the disc.
