What are rapids and where are they found
Turbulent sections of the river, typically found in the upper course where the gradient is steeper
Why do rapids form
Form as a result of the rivers vertical erosion rapidly in a localised section of the river bed
What 2 processes are involved in rapid formation
Hydraulic action
Abrasion
Where do rapids generally form
Where there is a sudden steepening of the river bed
At what 4 places do rapids form
At steeper gradients
High turbulence
Different bands of rock
Fast velocity of river
What is an eddy
A river feature that forms just downstream of an obstruction. An eddy can form on the side of the river or immediately after a boulder in the river. The water in an eddy is flowing in the opposite direction from the river and at times can be swirling or violent
