3 stages to prove negligence
1. duty of care existed 2. that duty was breached 3. consequential harm

the bolam test
- "did the professional act in accordance with a practice accepted as proper by a responsible body of professionals?" -if another competent RVN/VS would do the same, the person is not negligent

malpractice
-improper, illegal or negligent professional behaviour -for example; medical/anaesthetic errors, poor post-op care, failure to follow protocols

gross misconduct
-severe acts that endanger patients, clients or colleagues and may justify dismissal or disciplinary -for example; intoxication at work, theft, fraud, deliberate harm, falsifying records

whistleblowing
moral and professional duty to report malpractice or misconduct if witnessed

official recognition of a vet surgeons particular knowledge and skills in a designated field of veterinary practice
