refraction:
waves changing direction as they pass from 1 medium to another.
higher the density
= slower the wave will travel through it
why does refraction happen?
change in speed of a wave dependent on density of the material.
light travelling from a less dense material (AT AN ANGLE), to a more dense material will bend…
towards the normal.
(if it enters perpendicular, it will stay the same)
when a wave travels into a denser material…
the frequency stays the same.
triangular prism:
different wavelengths are refracted by different amounts.
so white light through a triangular prism = diff colours bend at diff degrees so they spread out into a rainbow.
