procedures for enhancing validity
A
- triangulation- combination of methods in the same study of the same phenomena. confirmability in triangulation refers that findings from one observation are confirmed in another E.G. Clarke N. 2013
- member checks= respondent validation, ask ppts to comment on our analysis so they can challenge and expand
- peer de-briefing- ask colleagues- provided with a small sample of the data and compare their coding - inter-rata reliability
- disconfirming case analysis= looking at negative cases (outliers)
- audit trail- evidence that starts from data collection all the way to your final report. allows all steps to be retraced. helps to establish transferability and confirmability.
- immersion in the setting- prolonged engagement in study reduces observer effects as as time goes on they become less visible
- thick description- holistic- sufficient breadth and depth to our analysis. we demonstrate how we sample our ppts- how we write about our research
