1. A strong united republic would be more effective than the individual states at controlling “factions”
2. A large republic will help control factions because when more representatives are elected, there will be a greater number of opinions.
3. A large republic will be far less likely to have one majority opinion since there is a great variety of opinions

2. When people give up their liberty, they will rarely get it back, except through force
3. Strongly opposed to the elastic clause in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution
4. Strongly opposed to the 6th article which said that U.S. laws are “The Supreme law of the land”
5. Argues that most of the rights left to the states would be “annihilated” through Article 1 Section 8
6. Argues that collecting taxes is the “great engine of oppression and tyranny”
7. Allows the federal government to raise and support armies in peacetime
8. Solution: Republics must be small, no successful large Republic in human history

2. Limitations placed upon the central government made it ineffective

6. Not able to raise taxes, no standing armies
