Q

What does a potometer measure?
Rate of water uptake, which is proportional to transpiration rate.

How is transpiration rate measured using a potometer?
By measuring distance an air bubble moves in a capillary tube over time.

Why is a potometer only an estimate of transpiration rate?
Not all water taken up is transpired; some is used in photosynthesis or maintaining cell turgor.

Why is cutting the shoot a limitation in potometer experiments?
Roots are removed, so water uptake under natural conditions is not measured
