What is an alternative/experimental hypothesis
It is a hypothesis that states :
. There will be a significant relationship between two variables
. One variable will effect the other
. There will be a significant difference between two sets of data
What is a direcional hypothesis?
Hypothesis that predicts the specific direction
Key words - Increase, decrease, higher, lower
What is a non-directional hypothesis?
Hypothesis that predicts a difference or one variable will affect the other.
Key words - influence, affect, difference.
What is a Null hypothesis?
Hypotheisis that says
. No significant relationship
. That one variable will have no effect on another
.there is no significant difference between two sets of data
What does “operationalising variables” mean?
Means we need to clearly state what we will take as a measurement
E.g intelligence measured by performance on a IQ test
What is the Iv?
Variable which the experimenter manipulates
What is the Dv?
The variable that the experimenter measures

- IV naturally occuring
- Iv is a simple difference between people e.g gender, age.
- environment can be lab setting or natural
- causal conclusion tentatively drawn

- Very high level of control over variables allowing cause and effect to be made
- uses standardised procedure
