Floating ribs
Head of typical rib:
- Wedge shaped head
- Two facets separated by the crest of the head
- One for articulation with the numerically corresponding vertebra at the level
- One for articulation with vertebra superior to it
Neck:
- Connects the head with the body at the level of the tubercle
Tubercle:
- Smooth, articular part for corresponding transverse process of the vertebra
- Rough, nonarticular part for attachment of the costotransverse ligament
Shaft
- Thin, flat, and curved
- Greatest curvature at the costal angle
- Costal groove- internal surface that protects the intercostal nerve and vessels
