What are the 3 main types of rock?
Sedimentary, Igneous and Metamorphic
How are Sedimentary rocks formed?
They are formed by lots of small grains (sediment) gathering at the ocean floor and condensing into each other to form the rock.
Can sedimentary rocks have fossils in them?
Yes, because the sediment that forms them can have fossils in cased in it.
Give an example of a sedimentary rock.
Sandstone, shale, limestone, and chalk, along with evaporites like halite and rock salt.
How are Igneous rocks formed?
They are formed when lava cools from a volcano. There are also two types of Igneous rocks: intrusive and extrusive.
What is the difference between an intrusive Igneous rock and an extrusive Igneous rock?
An intrusive igneous rock has much larger crystals because they have more time to cool. While an extrusive igneous rock has small crystals because they cool much quicker and have less time to expand.
What is an example of an extrusive Igneous rock?
Basalt, obsidian, pumice, andesite and rhyolite.
Give an example of an intrusive Igneous rock.
Granite, diorite, gabbro, and peridotite
Commonly, would igneous rocks contain fossils?
No, they can only have fossils on very rare occasions.
How are Metamorphic rocks formed?
They are made of sedimentary or igneous rocks that have been put under extreme heat and pressure, forming a metamorphic rock.
What does a metamorphic rock look like?
They have a wavy and band-like pattern, with crystals all aligned in the same direction.
Give an example of a Metamorphic rock
Quartz, marble, slate
