Discuss the Five Good Emperors, years of rule, and major achievements.
Nerva — 96–98 CE Began the sequence. Chosen by the Senate after Domitian’s assassination; stabilised the state and adopted Trajan. Trajan — 98–117 CE Oversaw the empire at its greatest territorial extent; known for public works, justice, and military success. Hadrian — 117–138 CE Shifted to consolidation; travelled widely; fortified frontiers (including Hadrian’s Wall). Antoninus Pius — 138–161 CE Presided over one of the most peaceful and prosperous periods in Roman history. Marcus Aurelius — 161–180 CE Philosopher-emperor; co-ruled with Lucius Verus (161–169) and later alone; confronted the Marcomannic Wars and internal crises.
79
Why did Lucius Verus and Marcus Aurelius become “co-Augusti” or co-Emperors?
Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus began their reign together in AD 161 because it was the final step in a succession plan engineered by Hadrian, and faithfully executed by Antoninus Pius. Here is the strictly factual outline: 1. Hadrian’s Succession Plan Hadrian, ageing and ill, adopted Antoninus Pius on the condition that Antoninus in turn adopt two younger men: • Marcus Aurelius (then Marcus Annius Verus), • Lucius Verus (Lucius Ceionius Commodus). Hadrian intended a stable, multigenerational transition. Marcus and Lucius were therefore legally brothers through adoption. 2. Marcus Aurelius Was the Senior Heir By the time Antoninus Pius died in 161: • Marcus was enormously respected, • Already consul twice, • Already married into the imperial family (Faustina the Younger), • And clearly the primary heir. The Senate wanted him alone. 3. Marcus Insisted on Making Lucius Co-Emperor Marcus refused to take the throne unless Lucius Verus received equal imperial rank. This act is well-attested by the ancient sources and was seen as a gesture of loyalty, legality, and perhaps morality. Thus, they became co-Augusti, the first true pair of joint emperors in Roman history. 4. Why It Worked (at least early on) • Marcus handled administration, philosophy, and internal governance. • Lucius oversaw the military response to the Parthian War. • Their responsibilities were largely complementary. • They shared the same adoptive father and had no rivalry. 5. Lucius Verus’s Early Death Lucius Verus died in 169, probably of a plague-related illness, ending the dual reign. So the dual emperorship began not through crisis or rivalry, but because: Hadrian designed it, Antoninus Pius preserved it, and Marcus Aurelius upheld it.
