Define REP
performing an exercise through a full range of movement
Define ROM
range of movement
define DROM
dynamic range of movement
define positive phase
the phase where you overcome gravity - “the lifting phase”
define negative phase
the phase where you resist gravity “ the lowering phase”
define a SET
a group of REP’s
define prime muscle
the primary mover - the muscle that is contracting to produce the movement. also known as the agonist.
define assisting muscle
the secondary mover - the muscles assisting the primary mover also called the synergist.
define antagonistic pair
a pair of muscles that have opposite effects to eachother. eg, biceps and triceps
define isotonic contractions
isotonic contractions are those that cause the muscle to change length as it contracts and causes movement of a body part.
define concentric phase
the lifting phase. the muscle fibers move closer together. we always exhale during the concentric phase.
define ecentric phase
the lowering phase. the muscle fibres move further away. we always inhale during the ecentric phase.
explain what it is meant by a compound exercise.
it is also known as a multiple joint exercise. these are exercises that work or use 2 or more joints.
define joint
a point where 2 bones meet.
explain what it is meant by an isolation exercise.
uses or works only 1 joint.
define isometric contractions
no visible movement takes place.
define a circuit
a group of exercises performed for one set until all the exercises are complete
define training age
the age in months or years the client is training. it is the length of time a person is training on a consistent basis without a break.
explain the “training effect”
whatever workout you are doing gives you the desired effect.
define strength training
any form of resistance training engaged in to enhance muscle strength.
define resistance training
any form of exercise that causes muscles to work and contract against an external force.
define weight training
any form of resistance training where weights are used to provide resistance to challenge your strength.
define body building
differs from strength training in that its primary goals are to maximise muscle mass while reducing body fat.
define hypertrophy
pure muscle building
