The conditioned reflex: 3 fundamental processes
Excitation
Inhibition
Disinhibition
Will Power
Where there is a conditioned reflex, there is no free will
“Will power” is dependent on our previously learned reflexes (alluded to in class)
Excitation
Excitation=basis for life, action is key to survival
Emotional problems cannot be reasoned out of with thought; we must be trained out of it
Everything is natural, under the circumstances; UCS in environment/circumstance→UCR
We act in accordance w/ our conditioning
We do not control ourselves, rather we are controlled by our habit patterns and histories; habits and emotions determine our thoughts
We only have volition from our habits
Personality is dependent on feeling, based on emotional training
Individual Differences, Men and Women
Women are guided more by feeling/excitation
Men are more inhibited in emotional expression and are therefore more likely to seek therapy
AS: “Men suffer more pressure from the world”
Neurosis
Result of inhibition of natural impulses
Salter’s conception of the key to happiness
Basic inhibitions to permit living in society, but no extra inhibition to interfere with happiness
