a group of participants selected from and represents a population of research interest.
define population
the population is the entire group of people belonging to a particular category. e.g all uni students.
define generalisability
having a sample that represents the population. (otherwise the results will not generalise well beyond the sample.)

what is snowballing sampling?
the researcher depends on a small number of participants to help them identify other potential research subjects.
what is random sampling?
each member has an equal chance of being chosen. e.g lottery.

several groups in a population important to represent those groups in a sample.
