UMIB: Pan Pan
SMIB: Securite

Describe the MARB process? What is it used for?
MARINE ASSISTANCE REQUEST BROADCAST
When a mariner is clearly in zero distress and does not want to call for commercial salvage, read them the first half of the MARB Broadcast paper to get their permission to send out an MARB.
USCG waits 10 mins before responding to ensure enough time for someone else to reach out. Use case examples are: out of gas, run aground, etc. **ZERO DISTRESS*
You think you may have heard a Single MAYDAY on CH16, what actions should you take?
What is an UNCOR Distress, and what is the minimum response?
UNCOR Distress is when you have a distress call and no known position.
The minimum response is an UNCOR UMIB for 1 hour.
What types of flares are there?
Parachute, Meteor, and Handheld
Red and Orange are distress
Green and White are training
Parachute Flare
Rapid rise, slow descent
Meteor flare
Rapid rise, rapid descent usually in clusters of 3 or more
Hand held flare
Steady flame ex Jurassic Park style
Fist Method
Place bottom of fist on horizon line. Every knuckle line up from the horizon line is +2 degrees.
Clock Method
Articulate a static, ideally well known land mark or mass, and establish that landmark/mass as directly in front or behind you ie your 6 or your 12. Then articulate where the flare was sighted relative to that fixed point by orienting it on the same imaginary “clock”
