Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Physiological needs
These are things needed to survive physically. For example, food, water and warmth.
Safety and security
When feeling in danger the student may not want to carry on with the task; therefore, they may become tense and lose the ability to focus.
Belonging
It’s important to foster a sense of belonging, especially among students who may not know each other. For young children, building trust and strong group rapport is essential to promote a sense of belonging.
Self Esteem
When we feel good about ourselves, and respected, we will be more confident and ready to attempt new and challenging tasks. If we feel the opposite, our desire to gain respect and self esteem can affect our performance.
Self-actualisation
The desire to be one’s best at something.
