what does BPE stand for?
Basic Periodontal Examination
what do the numbers of BPE indicate
0- Healthy.optimum gum health. no plaque/ tartar/ calculus/ bleeding. gums not inflamed/ great colour/solid. no pockets which are too large/ no treatment needed. oral care/hygiene routine should stay as it is.
1- healthy but some plaque present and some bleeding. May need a bit of scaling/ ,ay need to focus on parts of mouth where patient is not spending as much time on when brushing. noticed this is usually the lowers at the back- where saliva accumulates due to nearby salivary gland. people forget to brush here a lot.
2- calcification present (hardened plaque). Can’t get rid with a toothbrush, ultrasonic scaling needed (instrument which releases water + vibrates) or hand scaler
3- moderate gum disease/ periodontitis (perio treatment needed). Lots of hardened plaque and quite deep gum pockets. gums are inflamed. Perio probe used to look at gum pockets along teeth, instead of looking at each sextant aroundd the tooth each tooth is looked at individually. Scaling used but this time under the gums to get rid of sub calculus. Can be painful so local anaesthetic may be used- gums will be inflamed and sensitive
4- advanced gum disease + potential bone loss/ recession. Teeth held in place by alveolar bone- bone can recede with severe gum disease so teeth have less support to be held in place- teeth mobility may occur which is irreversible. Teeth will either fall out on their own or have to be extracted. Periodontal treatment also needed.
how dloes the BPE work?
1) look at 6 parts of the mouth (top right, top middle, top left, bottom right, bottom middle, bottom left)
what is furcation involvement? (*)
roots visible due to bone/ gum loss
