What does a registered design protect?
Appearance of whole or part of a product arising from features such as lines, contours, shape, texture, materials or ornamentation.
What is a “product”?
Any industrial or handicraft item, including packages, get up, graphics, typeface, parts for assembly into complex product
What is a “complex product”?
Object that can be (re)assembled into two or more replaceable parts.
What form is filed to register a design?
Form DF2A
Is a design registration restricted to a single view?
No-multiple views can be filed.
Is a design application limited to a single design?
No, can file multiple designs per application and pay reduced fee for each subsequent design.
Does a design have to appear “attractive”?
No-can be prosaic.
What sort of ornamentation is not allowed?
Protected symbols.
What if there are multiple parts to a product?
Can register them separately.
Can you register the colour of a design?
No
