Q

What does Sigmund Freud argue about secularism

A

Religion is entirely in the human mind. Man created God because of the fear we have of certain things (death, exams) and God is a coping mechanism. It is childish

Sigmund Freud beliefs on mind

A
  • Religion is childlike, comforts people instead of telling the truth. Due to this, many wont outgrow religion
  • religion should be classed as a mass delusion
  • Religion is a product of ‘wish fulfilment’
-Religion represses human desires like (murder or rape) which makes religion appear good

Q

Whats an example of a country who separated church and state

22
Q

What did France do that separates Church and State

A
  • Removed funding from Christian schools
  • Banned religious symbols in public spaces
23
Q

Why should religion be intertwined with state (Education)

A

Churches are big sponsors of education with 1.8 million people educated in catholic schools.

Christian churches supplied schools longer than government meaning this is deep rooted this is called the ‘heritage argument’

Christian schools are also more diverse than non religious schools

24
Q

Whats the heritage argument

A

Its the idea that Church and education is so deep rooted that removing them would almost be an act of robbery.

25
What does the British Humanist Association (BHA) say
Says secular state shouldn’t find schools with religious character. Selecting children based on belief segregates them. Dawkins also is conerned with how religious fundamentalist schools don’t teach science and they teach religion to young children
26
What does Leslie Francis say
Says more young people are committed to Christianity and they are more open towards religious backgrounds, not less
27
What does Francis collins say
Made important discoveries to human genome project. Was an atheist at work but his work with dying patients led him to question his views. Proof scientist can still be Christian
28
What did Charles Taylor argue for education
Everyone should live in a society that contributes to their individuality
29
General criticisms for Dawkins
- Focuses too much on extremist beliefs - if the churches are who funded education fundamentalists, they wouldnt develop in society - However religion is taught in difference just like culture or identity
30
What does Christopher Dawson argue
Secular education systems are problematic. Education dominated by anti-relifious ideology, endangered religion and society wants to remove religion as a whole
31
What does James Conroy say
Religious schools are important as they counter general views of society creating more perspectives
32
What are some arguments between religion and state co existing
- Involving religion in law doesnt represent most of the population - putting Church of England at the heart of government excludes people part of a different religion - However, other religious heads are apart of the house of Lords like Chief Rabbi (jews) and Duke of Norfolk (Catholic)
33
What are some examples in the UK of more inclusivity
- King Charles renames ‘Defender of faith’ to ‘Defender of the Faith’ - NHS policy that if something doesnt align with religious beliefs you can opt out
34
Examples of religion affecting government
- Tony Blair advisor saying “we don’t do religion” Contrast: Gordon Brown and Theresa May said religious beliefs helped them with decisions
35
What does Rowan Williams put forward
Progmattic and Procedural secularism
36
What is Progmattic Secularism
Any presence of religion is offensive
37
What is Procedural secularism
Other religions are welcomed
38
What is secularisation theory
Suggested that religion would decline and technology would advance
39
What did social scientist say about secularisation theory
Based on mistaken assumptions
40
What did David Ford find out
Most people in Britiain identify as non-religious but globally, more people link themselves to a religion
41
What did Peter burger do
He retracted his statement on secularisation theory and said a secular state may be filled with believing people. E.g USA He accepts that the world today is more religious than ever. Backs up Ford and Bretherton
42
What are examples of human values
Compassion, forgiveness and peace
43
What makes human values human and not Christian
These values (compassion etc) dont need to be achieved by believing in the afterlife
44
Why are some ‘human values’ considered spiritual for a Christian
Because not all human values are explained in one way. E.g love: loving your enemies contradicts self-interest making it different from normal human values
45
Why are spiritual values more important than human values
Human values are part of the physical corrupted world whereas spiritual values are part of a pure and perfect one. E.g Universal human rights is a human made system but humans can sin and behave immorally so we shouldn’t create a system that decides human rights
46
Whats an argument that there is more difference between human and spiritual values
Human values are spiritual values. God incarnated as Jesus. Since Jesus became human, God shows the worth of humanity
47
How does Christianity have a negative influence on society
- Seen as Patriarchal; only men as priests - Encourages unscientific views on the world - Christianity limits woman on abortion. Anti euthanasia
48
What examples does Dawkins give to illustrate his point on Christianity having a negative influence
Dawkins says: - Christianity played a role in criminalising homosexuality - George W Bush gave executions but didnt allow embryonic research
49
Proof of Christianity being a positive influence on society
- Christian Churches established education and schools - Anglican Bishops decriminalised homosexuality - Martin Luther King was religious and gave Black people equal rights - Food banks today are christian
50
How is Christianity a contributor to society
In Britain: - King head of Church of England - National holidays linked with Christian festivals - Most oaths taken in court over the bible - Remembrance Sunday is where we remember dead war heroes - National flag has a Christian cross
51
What does Richard Dawkins think about people studying the bible in schools
Agrees with it as the literature is perfect for study. E.g phrases like: - Lost sheep - Doubting Thomas - Good Samaritan - Fight the good fight Dawkins agrees Christianity is a major contributor to society
52
However what does Dawkins think about the future of Society and its links with Christianity
Says we should move on and that Christianity can be appreciated for the past. Society is already moving on e.g music has diverse influences so it doesnt represent the world
