what is selective breeding
breed other animals and plants for particular characteristics
used to feed increasing population
produce higher yields
how are organisms selectively bred
1 decide what characteristics of the species is desirable
2 select parents with high levels of this characteristic
3 breed from these individuals
4 select the best offspring and breed again
5 repeat for many generations
disadvantages to selective breeding
reduces number of alleles in gene pool which reduces variation
increases chance of inheriting disease and there may not be an organism that contains the allele for resistance causing species to extinct
