What are arithmetic sequences?
Sequences where you are adding or subtracting the same amount each time
What is the common difference?
The amount the numbers in the sequence changes by each time
What are geometric sequences?
Where the numbers are being multiplied or divided by the same amount each time
What is the common ratio?
The amount the numbers are being multiplied by each time
How would you figure out the next term in an arithmetic sequence?
You would add or subtract the common difference to the previous term
How would you figure out the common difference in an arithmetic sequence with gaps?
You would figure out the difference between present terms then divide it by the number of terms between them.
How would you figure out the next term in a geometric sequence?
You would multiply the last term by the common ratio
What is a quadratic sequence?
when the second difference is the same each time
How would you figure out the next number in a quadratic sequence?
You would add the next 2nd difference to get the first difference then add the 1st difference to the last term in the sequence
How would you figure out previous terms in a geometric sequence?
You would switch the direction and symbol of the common ratio ( to division) from the most previous
What is a the Fibonacci sequence?
where the first two terms are 1and sum to make the next
What is a Fibonacci-type sequence?
A sequence that follows the same rules but doesn’t start with the same numbers
How would you workout the next term in a Fibonacci sequence?
You would add the 2 previous terms together
How would you work out previous terms in a Fibonacci sequence?
note that the previous ones added with the next one makes the one after that so you can subtract the next one by the one after that.
