St John’s ambulance
If you ring 999 it may be this organisation rather than an NHS ambulance. In 2014-15 England’s 10 ambulance services spent £57.6m on private or voluntary services due to increasing demand and pressure to meet targets
Mountain and cave rescue
When you phone 999 for this service they put you through to this charity. They are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their purpose is rescue people from mountains, search for missing people (on and off mountains) and searching river banks for people
Red Cross
In Wales this charity runs the “home from hospital” discharge scheme helping patients to leave hospital when their medical and nursing needs have been met. For six weeks after, they then provide them with emotional and practical support to ease the transition from hospital to home. They also help emergency services when a disaster strikes such as a flood
