Q

RNLI

A

It provides a 24 hour search and rescue service around the coast of the Uk and Ireland, as well as a seasonal lifeguard service. There is no public service alternative so the authorities rely on the charity when people go missing at sea or on coastal paths

Q

St John’s ambulance

A

If you ring 999 it may be this organisation rather than an NHS ambulance. In 2014-15 England’s 10 ambulance services spent £57.6m on private or voluntary services due to increasing demand and pressure to meet targets

Q

Red Cross

A

In Wales this charity runs the “home from hospital” discharge scheme helping patients to leave hospital when their medical and nursing needs have been met. For six weeks after, they then provide them with emotional and practical support to ease the transition from hospital to home. They also help emergency services when a disaster strikes such as a flood
