What is sexual harassment?

Unwelcome sexual advances, request for sexual favors, offensive comments, or gestures of sexual nature.
Sexual harassment is conduct that involves unwelcomed sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, deliberate or repeat offensive comments or gestures of sexual nature. It is so severe or pervasive that a reasonable person would perceive and the victim does perceive environment is hostile or offensive.

Sexual assault is intentional sexual contact characterized by the use of force, threats, intimidation, or abuse of authority, or when the victim does not or cannot consent.

   Quit pro quo is the instance when the offender places conditions of some sort Over a person’s career or term of employment in return for sexual favors.
   Hostile environment is when a victim is subject to unwanted, unsolicited comments and or contact that a sexual in nature

   Verbal sexual harassment can be any sexual comment, sound, or profanity.
   Nonverbal sexual harassment is using physical contact, such as bodily gestures in a suggestive manner.
   Physical contact is any form of physical contact that is unwanted and unsolicited. Physical contact may also be reported as sexual assault.

What are the different techniques of dealing with sexual harassment?

1. Direct approach- Confront the harrasser and tell them that this behavior is not appreciated, not welcome, and that it must stop.
2. Indirect approach - Send a letter to the harasser stating the facts, personal feelings about the inappropriate behavior, and expected resolution.
3. Chain of command - Report the behavior to the immediate supervisor or others in the chain of command and ask for assistance resolving the situation.
4. Filing a Formal complaint- Written statement of the behavior and/ or a certified sexual self response cordinator (SARC) for processing through official complaint channels.
5. Filing an informal complaint - Resolving through discussion, problem identification, and/or clarification of the issues.
