CO Responsibilities
- ensure effective sight program
- lead by example by wearing PPE
Safety Officer Responsibilities
- evaluation of areas, processes and equipment when not previously looked ay by IH or when changes to work place conditions
- maintain list of eye hazardous areas etc..
- *annual evaluation for command compliance
DIVO Responsibilities
- ensure areas are properly marked and labeled
- ensure ppl where ppe properly
- refer ppl to MDR for prescription eyewear ppe
MDR Responsibilities
- schedule sight screening exams
- provide refractory services and order eyeglasses prescriptions
Class III and Class IV laser workers
need to be in sight conservation program
- research and development (R&D) and lab ppl who work with unenclosed 3 and 4 lasers or repair class 3 or 4 laser systems
- -other laser workers deemed very unlikely to be enrolled in SCP. Do not require surveillance.
What procedures are used to designate eye hazardous areas?
- DETERMINATION (by baseline IH survey, maintained by SO)
- Operations requiring eye pro (certain ops require this)
- DESIGNATION- Deck striping 2-3 in yellow and black striped or checkerboard. PLACARD mounted directly above hazard , machinery or door w/ “CAUTION-eye protection required in this area”
- not required on individual tools
List the types of Eye wear PPE
- Safety goggles/spectacles (mists, vapors)
- Chemical goggles (liquid splashes, sprays)
- Welding goggles/helmet (protects eye ,face, ears and neck)
- Chipping goggles (large flying, chipping, grinding, chiseling)
- Face Shields ( protects face and neck-needs other ppe)
- Ballistic Eye Pro Devices- may replace standard safety glasses, additional protection high impact
State Equipment Requirements for sight protection
*American National Standard Institute (ANSI) Compliance
-“Z-87” must appear on all eye and face pro eqpt
-if re-usable clean in hot, soapy water and rinse, the immerse in disinfectant solution for 10 min and air dry
Temporary eyewear- command maintains sufficient quantity for visitors, workers and ppl awaiting prescriptions

How often do Emergency Eyewash Facilities need to maintained?
Monthly PMS required!

anywhere ppl may be exposed to corrosive material
-battery shop -battery locker- HAZMAT/chemical area
List access and availability features of Eye wash stations
- Must be within 10 SECONDS from the hazard
- be positioned within the eyewash nozzle not less than 33 in or more than 45in away from deck.
What is the flow rate of Eye wash stations?
0.4 gallons per minute for 15 continuous minutes.
