3 layers of the skin
Epidermis: thin outermost layer
Dermis: nerves and blood vessels
Hypodermis: Fat and connective tissue
Keratinocytes
Keratin protein: fibrous protein
Make and secrete glycolipids
Start at the stratum basale
What cells does the stratum basale contain
Melanocytes: contains melanin
Keratinocytes
What happens when exposed to sun
Keratinocytes send a chemical signal to the melanocytes which stimulates the melanocytes into making more melanin. The melanocytes move the melanin into small sacs called melanosomes. The keratinocytes move the melanin upwards
Stratum spinosum
Contain dendritic cells: star shaped immune cells
