Compass Calibration
Uses bearings from Gun 1, 2 and 3 to calculate compass/grid correction.
Compare Gun Bearing and Compass Bearing
(front/rear of gun).
Calculate difference in bearing for each gun
If within 20 mils, combine for Total Difference.
Apply ICV and ICE corrections
Requirements include: centralised traverse, level ground, avoid magnetic interference, apply GMA.
HCE
(Hydrochloride Ethylene) – 155mm DM105.
Red Phosphorus
– 105mm L52.
White Phosphorus
– 81mm & 120mm mortars.
Base eject (BE) shells
planned the same.
WP
is ground burst.
Base Ejection Smoke
105mm Red Phosphorus.
155mm HCE
.
Carrier shell and base plate risk
.
Components
casing, RP compound, exhaust, supporting tube, cover plate.
Red Phosphorus Effects
Rises approx 15m.
Flows downwind
.
Dense, narrow smoke stream
.
Most effective for approx 150m
.
Ideal conditions
cool and damp, clings to ground.
Upwind point location
.
Line of screen where smoke is effective
.
Rate of fire required
.
Strong wind disperses smoke faster
.
Low wind allows vertical dispersal
.
May require increased rate of fire
.
