Planets

A

A planet is a celestial body that is in orbit around a star and has enough mass to
form an almost round shape due to its own gravity and have ‘cleared the region’
around its orbit of other celestial bodies.

Q

The Big Bang Theory (formation of the universe)

A

• Before the big bang (14 billion years ago):
• The entire universe was smaller than a pinhead.
• It was extremely hot and dense.
• It then exploded creating time, space and matter.
• The universe expanded.
1st piece of evidence for the big bang
• In 1964, an energy called ‘cosmic background radiatio 2nd piece of evidence for the big bang
• Edwin Hubble and Vesto Slipher discovered that the universe is expanding.

18
Q

What is a solar eclipse?

A

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon comes between the Sun and the earth

19
Q

What is a lunar eclipse

A

A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moo

20
Q

Draw a labellee diagram to show a model of a solar eclipse

21
Q

Draw a labelled diagram of a lunar eclipse

22
Q

Why do total eclipses not occur every time the moon revolves around the earth

A

the Moon’s orbital plane is tilted about 5 degrees relative to the Earth’s orbital plane around the Sun. This means that during most new and full moons, the alignment isn’t perfect, and the Moon is either too high or too low to cast its shadow on Earth (solar eclipse) or pass through Earth’s shadow

23
Q

What causes a day - night cycle on earth

A

Earth’s rotation on its axis, which is an imaginary line running from the North to the South Pole. As Earth spins, different parts of the planet face the Sun, experiencing daytime, while the opposite side faces away from the Sun, experiencing nighttime.
